Working as part of the operations team this exciting development role offers the opportunity to design and code the build, automation and scalability solutions across multiple infrastructure environments. The role will also offer the opportunity to enhance and improve existing API’s using either the AWS toolkit or products such as Chef or Puppet. As this role will be primarily focused on hosted solutions to global customers it is suited to someone with experience working in either an APS, SaaS or IaaS provider

To make sparks fly you will have:

Fluency in at least one high-level programming language (C#, Java, Ruby, Perl or similar) and strong scripting skills.
Ideally experience coding with the AWS API's or with Opscode Chef or with Puppet
Experience in configuration management of operating system platforms.
Proven experience with both Windows and Linux O/S at a systems engineer level
Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking, network and application-level security, and OS internals (file systems, storage, process lifecycle, etc).

The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services.

The Information Technologies Branch of the Bureau of Meteorology manages the Communications and Computing Program to meet the corporate objectives of the Bureau. To meet these objectives the Software Systems and Services section operates Central & Regional computing infrastructure that hosts forecasting applications. The infrastructure is located in Head Office and Regional Offices.

The Bureau is seeking an experienced Linux Systems Administrator to deploy, support and continuously improve these systems. The appointee will join a team of AIX, Linux and VMware administrators responsible for maintaining the integrity of the Bureau’s Central & Regional forecasting systems. The supported infrastructure includes 10 highly available operational & developmental clusters (AIX, Red Hat Linux and VMware) that run forecasting applications, plus regional Storage Area Networks (SANs) and high performance Linux workstations. Occasional interstate travel may be required.

Experience in Linux image deployment, application packaging and deployment, configuration management systems, and identity management systems (including Kerberos) would be an advantage.

Free and Open Source Software internships for women

In an effort to get more women involved in FOSS, a number of organizations are offering Outreach Program for Women internships from December 10, 2013 to March 10, 2014. The application deadline is November 11, 2013. The applicants need to get in touch with individual projects they are interested in working on and make a small contribution ahead of the application deadline. The participating organizations are:

* Debian - GNU/Linux-based operating system
* Fedora - GNU/Linux-based operating system
* GNOME - GNU/Linux-based desktop environment and applications
* Linux Kernel - the most basic layer of the GNU/Linux operating system
* Mozilla - software that promotes the goals of the Open Web
* OpenStack - cloud deployment and management software
* Wikimedia - wiki software and infrastructure for Wikipedia and related projects
* Xen Project - virtualization platform

Participants will work remotely from home, while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within their project’s team and the rest of the FOSS community. The projects include software development, system administration, web development, user experience design, graphic design, documentation, and marketing. The stipend for the program is $5,000 (USD). Any woman available for a full time internship who has not previously participated in the Outreach Program for Women or Google Summer of Code is welcome to apply. Software Engineer - Opengear

Opengear designs and manufactures products for sophisticated data center and remote site management. We are looking for a Software Engineer (minimum 2 years' experience) to join our development team in Brisbane.

The engineering team develops and maintains the software for Opengear console servers and management appliances. Our devices run embedded Linux, with a mix of open-source tools (eg. OpenSSH, OpenVPN, NUT, Cherokee, etc.) and our own proprietary additions (serial management, CGI web interface, monitoring daemons, etc.). We work in a wide and varied code base, covering many fields -- embedded development, kernel development, networking, security, serial interfaces, web interfaces, web development, and so on.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You will be working on the software for our embedded Linux console servers and management appliance. Your duties will include:

* Feature development from initial scoping and design to deployment and long term maintenance.

* Providing assistance for escalated customer issues (diagnosing and fixing bug reports).

* Developer level testing, and assisting the test team with generating test plans.

* General infrastructure maintenance as required (build system, source control system, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS

Our engineers are expected to be able to work on any part of the software stack, from the operating system up to the Web front end

You should have experience in most of the following:

* Linux development

We are looking for an enthusiastic Director to manage an Embedded System Software team and run the Xilinx Brisbane Development Center.

You and your team own the development, verification, and integration of embedded software running on our award-winning Zynq All Programmable ARM-based SOC and our MicroBlaze soft processors. In this capacity, you will be directly involved in the architecture and productization of embedded software solutions for current and next-generation silicon products, working with a global team of engineers.

You will be responsible for our PetaLinux Tools product, Yocto meta-xilinx, and QEMU contributions. Guided by your software experience, you will provide input to the SOC Architecture team in the selection of IP blocks for next generation silicon. You will work with the Program Management team to deliver embedded software components in-line with the overall program schedule. You will work with the hardware engineering teams that develop silicon and soft IP. Across geographies and time zones, you will work with other teams to align on planning and execution. You will interact with 3rd party vendors and Ecosystem partners. You will be responsible for the Brisbane Development Center site logistics.

Overall, you will lead a growing team of embedded software engineers to deliver high-quality solutions to our customers and influence the future direction of embedded software at Xilinx.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Lead, motivate and manage the 9-person PetaLinux engineering team, consisting of senior and junior developers
* Monitor technology trends such as emerging standards for new technology opportunities
* Drive architecture of embedded software products at Xilinx. Establish technology guidelines based on best practices in architecture and embedded software development.
* Ensure reproducible software development and high quality through software engineering processes and best practices. Improve processes, procedures, and work flow.
* Work closely with Marketing and program managers to ensure development meets or exceeds customer requirements.
* Develop and execute software engineering plans, and manage software engineering schedules, resource allocation, and budget. This includes managing joint development with 3rd party vendors, and managing outsourced development.
* Engage in hands-on, in-depth analysis, review, and design of the software.
* Facilitate communications between the team and other off-site design centers.
* Support employee personal growth and provide team-building for the PetaLinux team
* Manage the Xilinx Brisbane Development Center site logistics

Education and Experience requirements:

* A Masters Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is required
* 15 years of experience in embedded/system software development and management
---> At least 6 years of experience with advanced proficiency:

You have worked with system emulation and virtual development environments.
